Verstappen Completes Perfect Sepang Comeback

Max Verstappen has won Formula 1's dramatic return to Sepang, taking his first victory of the 2026 season in a chaotic rain-affected Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

After taking his first pole of the season on Saturday, Verstappen converted it into victory on Sunday, finishing 2.307 seconds ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli, with Lewis Hamilton completing the podium for Ferrari.

It also continued Verstappen's remarkable Sepang story — he won the circuit's previous F1 race in 2017 and returned nine years later to win again.

Torrential Rain Turns Sepang Into Chaos

The Malaysian weather became one of the defining stories of the weekend.

Heavy rain and standing water forced the race start to be delayed by more than 90 minutes, with conditions creating tyre-strategy headaches throughout the field.

When racing finally settled into a rhythm, Verstappen emerged as the benchmark. Antonelli challenged strongly for Mercedes but ultimately had to settle for second.

Hamilton produced one of the drives of the afternoon. An early gamble on slick tyres dropped the Ferrari driver as low as 18th, but he fought back through the field and eventually passed Isack Hadjar to claim third.

Charles Leclerc followed in fourth, with Hadjar fifth and Oscar Piastri sixth.

Russell Retirement Changes the Championship

For Mercedes, however, the result was bittersweet.

George Russell was running third when a suspected power-unit failure ended his race just five laps from the finish.

It was a huge blow to Russell's championship hopes.

He entered Sepang 66 points behind Antonelli, but Antonelli's second-place finish combined with Russell's retirement has increased the championship gap to 84 points.

Mercedes had already endured a complicated weekend after its new upgrade package produced unexpected handling and straight-line performance problems during qualifying.

66 points became 84. Russell's title challenge just became much harder.

Verstappen took pole and victory. Antonelli strengthened his championship lead. Hamilton recovered from 18th to the podium. Russell suffered a potentially decisive retirement.

And the famous Sepang weather returned to transform the race.
