Márquez Turns MotoGP Championship Into a Two-Point Fight

Marc Márquez heads into the Indonesian Grand Prix just two points behind Jorge Martin after completing a dominant weekend at Motegi.

The Ducati rider won both the Japanese GP Sprint and Sunday's main race, collecting the maximum 37 points available across the weekend.

Martin arrived in Japan holding a 12-point advantage but saw his championship lead shrink dramatically despite finishing second in Sunday's Grand Prix.

The championship standings now read:

Twelve points became two. The MotoGP title fight is almost level.

Motegi Victory Gives Márquez Momentum

Márquez's Japanese GP victory marked his sixth Grand Prix win of 2026 and his 79th premier-class triumph.

After Martin started from pole position, Márquez moved into the lead on Lap 11 before controlling the remainder of the race.

He crossed the finish line 1.363 seconds ahead of Martin, with Marco Bezzecchi completing the podium.

The result strengthened Márquez's position as a leading championship contender heading into the final six rounds.

For Martin, second place was valuable damage limitation, but it was not enough to prevent Márquez from closing in.

Márquez has the momentum. Martin still has the lead.

Indonesia Presents a Different Challenge

The next round takes place at Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia, from October 9–11.

Although Márquez arrives with momentum, Mandalika presents a significant challenge. The Ducati rider has yet to finish a MotoGP Grand Prix at the Indonesian circuit, having experienced crashes and mechanical problems during previous visits.

Martin, meanwhile, will be looking to exploit a circuit that has historically suited Aprilia's strengths.

With six rounds remaining, the championship could change hands in Indonesia.

Can Márquez Complete His Championship Comeback?

For Winbox Racing, the battle between Márquez and Martin is becoming the defining storyline of the 2026 MotoGP season.

Márquez has recovered from a substantial championship deficit through consistent podium finishes and crucial victories. His perfect Motegi weekend has brought him within striking distance of Martin.

But Martin remains the championship leader, and the next race offers an immediate opportunity to respond.

Martin: 333 points. Márquez: 331 points.

Two points separate the title contenders heading into Indonesia.

The 2026 MotoGP championship is far from decided.
