Mercedes Upgrade Arrives at Sepang

Mercedes is preparing to introduce a significant upgrade package for the W17 at the 2026 Malaysia Grand Prix, giving championship rivals another reason to watch the Silver Arrows closely at Sepang.

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin previously confirmed that the team had little planned for Azerbaijan, with its next meaningful development package scheduled to arrive “from Malaysia onwards.” 

The upgrade is aimed primarily at improving the W17's aerodynamic performance and helping Mercedes regain the qualifying advantage it enjoyed during the opening part of the season.

Baku victory secured. Now Mercedes brings an upgraded car to Malaysia.

Upgrade Comes After Russell's Baku Victory

The timing could hardly be better.

George Russell won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26, cutting Kimi Antonelli's championship advantage from 81 to 66 points and giving Mercedes another victory in an already dominant campaign. 

Mercedes has won 11 of the opening 15 Grands Prix, but rival teams have increasingly challenged its one-lap advantage during recent weekends.

Shovlin has acknowledged that Mercedes wants to return to consistently fighting for pole rather than depending on individual circuits suiting the W17. 

Sepang therefore represents both an upgrade weekend and an important test of whether Mercedes can extend its performance advantage.

Sepang Will Put the New Package to the Test

The 5.543km Sepang International Circuit provides an ideal environment for evaluating a major aerodynamic update.

Its combination of long straights, high-speed direction changes, heavy braking zones and slower technical corners demands both aerodynamic efficiency and strong mechanical grip.

Malaysia's heat and humidity will also make cooling and tyre management critical throughout the weekend.

For Mercedes, the event carries additional significance because it is the home race of title partner PETRONAS as Formula 1 returns to Malaysia for the first time since 2017.

Mercedes Looks to Strengthen Its Advantage

For Winbox Racing, Mercedes arrives in Malaysia in an enviable position.

The W17 is already winning races. Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship. Russell has just reduced the gap with victory in Baku.

Now the fastest team of 2026 is bringing another development step.

With McLaren trying to understand the weaknesses exposed in Azerbaijan and Ferrari and Red Bull continuing their own development programmes, the first practice sessions at Sepang could provide an early indication of whether Mercedes has moved further ahead.

11 wins from 15 races. A championship 1–2. And now a major upgrade.

Mercedes isn't slowing down ahead of Sepang.
